WELCOME TO 2019 SEASON 3: RISING TALENT (AUG 4) 

In our third season for 2019, Brisbane Symphony Orchestra is proud to be supporting three outstanding young musicians – Anwen Deng, the youngest person ever to be accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, Jeremy Sun, winner in several categories in last year's Queensland Piano Competition and Jemima Drews, winner of this year’s James Carson Memorial Flute Prize

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Marche Slave, Op. 31. (French: “Slavonic March”) is an orchestral composition first performed in Moscow in November 1876, based on Serbian and Russian folk themes.

The piece, though relatively brief, includes a number of distinct moods; bright, festive passages contrast with more ominous ones.

Ludwig van Beethoven - Rondo from Piano Concerto No. 3, Soloist - Jeremy Sun

Beethoven composed his Piano Concerto No. 3 from 1796 to 1803. The composition was dedicated to Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia and it premiered on April 5, 1803, at Vienna’s Theatre an der Wien, with the composer himself as soloist.

This time our soloist Jeremy Sun is playing the final of its three movements, a Rondo Allegro which is all fun, opening with a piano solo and continuing with contrasting interludes of sunny temperament.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, Soloist - Anwen Deng

Mozart’s famous Piano Concerto No.21 (a staggering figure in itself: 21 piano concertos!) written in 1785, when he was only twenty-nine and just six years before his early death. It is sometimes referred to as the Elvira Madigan, after the 1967 Swedish film romance that featured the work.

The Concerto is scored for a large orchestra and is built on a fully symphonic scale.

With its few notes and bare outline, this work is a classic example of the manner in which Mozart frequently left himself room to improvise within the context of his own concertos.

William Lovelock - Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Soloist - Jemima Drews

William Lovelock (13 March 1899 – 26 June 1986) was an English classical composer and pedagogue who spent many years in Australia. He was the first Director of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane, then located in the old South Brisbane town hall building.

Leonard Bernstein - Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

When West Side Story hit Broadway like a bombshell, in September, 1957, it would be hailed as a landmark in American theatre. Idiomatic jazz and Latin timbres and a fluid and constant change from word to music and from scene to scene, is delineated, in concentrated form, by these Symphonic Dances.
