BSO Season 5, 2011

November

Jacaranda Season

Brisbane-raised, Australian-Czech pianist Suzanna Hlinka returns from her busy career in Europe to perform a much loved classic, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Brisbane Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antoni Bonetti. The composer wrote this after recovering from a period of clinical depression and writer’s block, and dedicated it to Nikolai Dahl, the physician who restored his self-confidence.

Earth Cry, by Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe (1986) evokes the sounds and atmosphere of the outback and bush, with evocative didgeridoo and varied percussion sounds. The expressive Cesar Franck Symphony in d minor concludes a program as rich in colour as jacaranda blossoms.
