And so to Brahms, his 4th and last symphony. A dark work in e minor of four movements, 3 of which are marked Allegro, full of emotional depth, colour and passion. The symphony in classical form (similar to the symphonies of Beethoven) with a set of variations (reminiscent of the mastery of Bach) in the 4th movement, displays true romanticism. Trombones, contrabassoon and even a triangle colour this master’s work.
The Flute Concerto by the neo-romantic American composer, Lowell Liebermann is to be performed by our Principal Flautist, Lee Norrell. Written for James Galway in 1991, the work pays homage to such great composers as Shostakovich and Copland.
To open our last programme for the year, Carl Maria von Weber’s fiery Der Freishütz overture.
Come, join us.
Look out for our 2009 programme: Stravinsky’s Firebird at the start, Elgar, Mendelssohn, Brahms Requiem in the middle, and Shostakovich’s 10th symphony to finish.
